Info / News
The 21st edition of La Misión is underway, and it comes with news.
The event will take place once again in Villa la Angostura between February 18 and 21, 2027.
La Misión is a non-stop, self-sufficient adventure trekking race. The route trails are very easy to follow because they are well-marked on the terrain thanks to the enormous work carried out by the organization, keeping the paths free of weeds and fallen trees. No unnecessary plastic ribbons are placed; instead, participants must follow the path they are on using common sense for hiking—meaning, you follow the trail. Several mountains of nearly 2,000 meters in height are climbed, endless valleys with native forests and their respective streams and rivers are traversed, passing through various high-altitude passes and wetlands, all while walking through a wonderful environment at all times.
La Misión is an authentic and genuine trekking race.
Before the race, a roadmap with references for each distance will be published on the website. With these references plus the Avenza Maps app, you can always ensure where you are located on the map and if you are on the correct path. This way, upon reaching a fork in the trails or a detour, you will know which path to take.

Routes:
La Misión 40 km: Promotional distance designed for everyone who wants to start exploring the La Misión format and self-sufficient trekking. Through a very accessible and pleasant route that accumulates about 1,500 meters of elevation gain and with a maximum time of 18 hours to complete the test, you can enjoy a great experience.
La Misión 60 km: Distance designed for all those who have already surpassed the 40 km distance and want to progress steadily to longer distances. Through a route similar to the 80 km one, but diverting earlier towards the finish line to reach 60 km, it accumulates about 1,700 meters of elevation gain. With a maximum time of 27 hours to complete the test, this new challenge is ideal for all those who have already done the 40 km but don’t yet feel ready for the 80 km.
La Misión 80 km: A tough test for all those who want to venture into long distances in 100% self-sufficient mode. Through a demanding route that accumulates more than 3,000 meters of elevation gain and a maximum time of 36 hours, including one night of walking, you can reach the finish line and fulfill a tough Mission.
La Misión 120 km: The stepping stone to the classic Mission, with an accumulated elevation gain of 5,000 meters and a maximum time of 54 hours to complete the route. This extremely hard test is a great personal challenge and the right step to becoming an authentic Missionary.
La Misión 160 km: The classic Mission, the most difficult race in South America due to its extremely harsh route, the race where elite runners find their limit and cannot break the 30-hour mark. Just like in life, in La Misión, perseverance, patience, resilience, and heart come into play to not give up. With more than 8,000 meters of actual elevation gain and 72 hours to complete the course, the challenge is set!… The reward? Being a Missionary.
La Misión 200 km: …. A Mission Impossible? … Only for experienced runners with great determination. A personal challenge of extreme difficulty. Without a doubt, one of the toughest races in the world. With more than 10,000 meters of actual elevation gain and 80 hours to complete the route…. The challenge is set! … “One is the size of the challenge one chooses”
Minimum walking times: Registration for La Misión includes the most precious thing we have in life: time. Enough time to reach the finish line walking—that is, without having to run. In all distances, you have the possibility of reaching the finish line with a final average pace of approximately 2.5 km per hour (24 minutes per km). This is an extremely generous time; almost no race in the world gives so much time for long distances. However, this is an average time obtained at the end of the route considering rest periods; therefore, to achieve this average, it is recommended to try to go faster at the beginning. Ex: If a person at km 50 is already averaging 2.5 km per hour, it is very unlikely they will reach the finish line since it is assumed they will go slower from then on as fatigue builds up. With this in mind, the organization will set a cutoff (for 120, 160, and 200 km) near km 50 (Mallín de las Nieblas), where runners who are extremely behind will not be able to continue. For the 40, 60, and 80 km distances, the only cutoff time is the maximum time at the finish line.
Distance transfer rule: At La Misión, we have a rule allowing participants to switch from a longer distance to a shorter one during the race and rank in the natural position they arrive in that distance. This means those who sign up for 200 km are included to switch and rank in all distances. Those who sign up for 160 km are included to switch and rank in all distances except 200 km. Those who sign up for 120 km are included to switch and rank in 80 km, 60 km, or 40 km. Those who sign up for 80 km can also switch to 60 km or 40 km, and those in 40 km can only finish 40 km. For this reason, all distances start together at the same time. This does not pose any advantage for the person switching distance since, upon reaching the finish line of that distance, they have completed exactly the same route as everyone else.
Equipment
La Misión is a true mountain trekking race lasting several days in total self-sufficiency. Everyone will spend at least one night on the route, most will spend two nights, and the last ones in the 160 and 200 km will spend three nights. The race is not suspended due to bad weather, but it can be neutralized for several hours. In February, although the weather is generally very good, it can rain in the valleys, and although unlikely, it can snow on the mountain tops. If it rains with strong winds, the weather can be very hostile. For all these reasons, we require a set of safety items which are listed in the Mandatory Equipment.
